Postnatal checkup

Six weeks after the delivery, we would like to see you again for the postnatal checkup. You can call our assistant around three weeks after childbirth to make an appointment with the midwife who was present at the delivery.

During this checkup, your midwife will ask how you and your baby are doing, how the feedings are going and how life as a parent suits you. We will examine your abdomen to see if your muscles have healed well, we will check your perineum, measure your blood pressure and, if necessary, your iron level. We will also talk to you about birth control. We often talk about the delivery again. Finally, we would like to know whether you are satisfied with our services and/or whether you feel that there are things that need improvement.

Child and family center (the 'consultatiebureau')

Your maternity nurse will arrange the transfer to the child and family center. The child and family center will contact you to schedule a first home visit. This visit has nothing to do with the hearing test, and usually takes place between 2 and 4 weeks after childbirth. The district nurse will inquire how the feedings are going, and what the weight of the baby is.

You can call us for questions or in case of problems until the visit of the district nurse. The nurse will then take over the medical care of the baby.

The child and family center has open office hours twice a week. You can go there to weigh your baby or to ask questions. If you have any questions about your child (younger than four years old), and you want to discuss them with a nurse, you can also call the information line: 070 752 67 00, Monday to Friday, 9am - 12.30, 1 pm - 4.30 pm. When your baby is about four weeks old, you will have your first regular checkup at the child and family center.

Vitamines

Vitamin K

With your approval, your baby will be given 1 mg of vitamin K immediately after birth. This will stimulate blood clotting. This dosis is sufficient for the first week. Starting on the 8th day up until three months after birth, you need to give your baby 150 micrograms of vitamin K every day. Vitamin K prevents haemorrhages. The body of your baby cannot produce enough vitamin K during the first three months after birth. If your baby gets formula, and he/she is drinking 500 ml or more a day, there’s no need to give him/her extra vitamin K.

Vitamin D

Your baby needs 10 micrograms of vitamin D every day, starting on the 8th day after birth until he or she is four years old. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium from the food of the baby, which is important to form and maintain strong bones.

Our bodies produce vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. But food can also be a source of vitamin D. A few examples of products with vitamin D are margarine, butter, and oil. The manufacturer adds vitamin D to almost all of these products. Meat, eggs, cheese, and fatty fish are also sources of vitamin D. The body of a small child does not produce enough vitamin D, which is why it is necessary to give him or her extra vitamin D for strong bones and teeth. Since August 2011, you should also give your baby extra vitamin D, if your baby exclusively drinks formula.

Heel prick

The heel prick screens your baby for rare, but very serious diseases. The sooner these diseases are detected, the better, because early detection can limit or even prevent serious damage to the physical and mental development of your child. During your pregnancy or within a few days after the delivery, we will give you an information leaflet about the heel prick procedure.

Your midwife will do the heel prick during a home visit between the 3rd and 6th day after the birth. You will only be informed about the results if there are any abnormalities. So in this case, “no news is good news”

Hearing test

As soon as you have registered the birth of your baby at the municipality, you will receive an invitation (in Dutch) from the child and family center (the 'consultatiebureau') for a hearing test. You usually get this invitation within 10 days after birth, and the test usually takes place on the 14th day.

You can do the hearing test at several locations of the child and family center, but not all. You might have to go to a different location than usual.
