Maternity care

Our midwifery practice works in close collaboration with maternity nurses. A maternity nurse assists the midwife during the delivery, which is the beginning of the maternity care. After childbirth, the maternity nurse will come to your house for 8 days to guide you and give you advice.

The purpose of maternity care is for you to learn to take care of your baby without help from others and for you to return to your daily routine. However, maternity care is also intended to give parents time to recuperate. The maternity nurse often pampers the parents a bit as well.

Checkups during the postpartum period

The most important task of the maternity nurse is to do the medical checkups.

The maternity nurse will check mothers temperature, heartbeat, the position of the uterus, the condition of the sutures and the breasts.

The maternity nurse will check the baby's temperature, weight, complexion, and the number of diapers with urine and poop. Also, she will check how the feedings are going.

The maternity nurse will report the results of the medical checkups in a file. This file is an important source of information for the midwife. By reading the reports when we come to visit you, we get a good idea of how you are doing.

The role of the maternity nurse is also to detect problems. In case of questions or problems, she will consult with the midwife.

The maternity nurse gives you information, tips and advice about the care of the baby, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding. She will help you with breastfeeding and/or preparing formula for the baby.

Maternity care is partially covered by your health insurance. If you have a basic health insurance policy, you have to pay a personal contribution of €4.40 per day. Some supplementary health insurances (partially) cover the personal contribution. Before you register with a maternity care agency, check which agencies are covered by your health insurance.

In principle, we collaborate with all maternity care agencies. You are free to choose any maternity care agency. If you do not have any preference, we recommend kraamzorg 1 op 1 (www.kraamzorg1op1.nl) or Bureau Klasse Kraamzorg. We have a positive experience with these maternity nurses. Always check with your insurance whether they cover the costs of the maternity care agency of your preference.

We recommend that you discuss the number of hours that your maternity nurse will help you out. We recommend that you do so during your pregnancy. The maternity nurse will come between 3 and 8 hours a day, depending on your wishes and the agreement you made with the maternity care agency. Take into account that some agencies deduct a minimum number of hours. In case of a normal postpartum period, a woman has a right to 49 hours of maternity care. If necessary, we can prolong the maternity care with a few hours a day up to 10 days. After 10 days, you no longer have a legal right to maternity care.
